Terrazas Family History |
|
This website is under construction. New pages, documents, and
photos will be added to it on an ongoing basis. We decided to
activate it now so that members of the Terrazas Family could see
what we have been doing and can share our excitement of having the
history of the family documented in one place -- for all descendants
of great grandparents Melicio and Isabel to enjoy. Please let
us know if you have photos or documents that you want us to add to
the website. We have created a Facebook page for the Terrazas
Family (the page is known as
Terrazas Familia) so that members can upload photos and
documents and share comments with each other.

Introduction My mother is Josephine Munguia. Her mother was Eligia Terrazas. Eligia's father was Melecio Terrazas. Melecio was my great grandfather. Melecio Terrazas was born in Mexico in 1873 in the City of Chihuahua. He had eight siblings. His parents were Jesus and Guadalupe Terrazas. Melecio married Isabel Rascon on February 13, 1897 at Rancho de Espinalano in Chihuahua. Isabel was born on November 16, 1881 in Silver City, New Mexico. Her parents were Manuel Rascon and Romula Munoz. Melecio and Isabel had 11 children. Eligia was born on December 1, 1899, at Rancho de Espinolenda in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua. Juana was born on May 6, 1901 at the same ranch. Angel was born on August 2, 1902 in the town of Ascension which is located in Chihuahua. Simon was born on December 5, 1903 at Hacienda de Boca Grande in Chihuahua. Leonor was born June 5, 1905 at the same Hacienda. Manuel was born on December 23, 1906 at Hacienda de Boca Grande. Ramona was born November 14, 1908 in Ascension. Juliana was born on April 6, 1911 in Ascension. Salvador was born on January 1, 1912 in Ascension. Guadalupe was both on May 2, 1913 at Hacienda de Boca Grande. After Melecio was killed in early 1914, Isabel, who was pregnant, moved to Columbus, New Mexico with her 10 children. Eulalia was born there on April 12, 1914. Chihuahua is a city located in the middle of the State of Chihuahua. Chihauhua is the largest state in Mexico. It officially became a Mexican state in 1824. During the Mexican Revolution which began in 1910 to overthrow the dictatorship that was ruling the nation, Poncho Villa and his "Northern Division" fought throughout Chihuahua demanding that the peasants be apportioned land. Whereas timber production and livestock ranching were once major parts of the economy, today they represent less than 10 percent of economic activity. The area is now dominated by manufacturing and assembly plants. The City of Chihuahua was founded in 1709. The city was captured and occupied by American troops in 1847 during the Mexican-American War. Archeologists have found evidence on inhabitants of the area now known as the State of Chihuahua dating back 3,000 years. When the Spanish first arrived in Chihuahua in the mid-1500s, more than 200 indigenous groups already inhabited the area.
Columbus is
a city in New Mexico near the border of Mexico. It is about 61 miles
from Ascension, with Boca Grande located about midway between the
two towns. Isabel Terrazas and her children were living in Columbus when the town was raided by the
Mexican revoluntionist, Poncho Villa, and his men on
March
9, 1916. The
raid turned into a full scale battle when the United States Army
came to the rescue. Villa and his men were driven back into
Mexico by the 13th Cavalry during what was called "The Battle of
Columbus." Two years before this battle, Poncho Villa and his
men had come onto the Terrazas ranch in Boca Grande and it was during
that raid that Melecio was killed. So regardless of whether she
lived in Mexico or the United States, the life of Isabel was
affected by Poncho Villa. |
