Eligia Terrazas was born on December 1, 1899 at Rancho de Espindoleno in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua. She was the oldest of 11 children. Eligia married Esquipula "Edward" Munguia on February 8, 1924 at the Church of La Sagrada Familia in Columbus, New Mexico. Prior to marrying, Eligia and her sister Juana worked as "suds ladies" washing clothes of soldiers at Camp Furlong, a nearby Army camp. The 1930 Census shows Eligia and Edward living in Columbus. The 1940 Census shows them living in Vanadium, New Mexico, a town 75 miles north of Columbus. Eligia and Edward had five children. Albert was born on April 26, 1924 in Columbus, New Mexico. Edward was born on July 1, 1925, also in Columbus. Amelia "Molly" was born on August 9, 1926 in Columbus. Josephine was born on February 14, 1930 in Columbus. Fred was born on January 24, 1942 in Vanadium, New Mexico. While they lived in Columbus, Edward worked as
a cowboy at a local ranch. After they moved to Vanadium,
Edward worked as a miner. The family moved to Keene,
California in 1945. After a big flood in Keene, the family
moved to Tehachapi where they rented a little house. |
