Arthur Roy Coleman
(1884-1932)
Known as Roy, Arthur Roy Coleman was the
youngest of the eight children of Calvert Coleman and Sarah
Westfall. Roy had a difficult childhood. His
father entered an alcohol dependency recovery program when Roy
was two years old. At the age of four, his family moved
from a farm in Belleville to Detroit where his father worked
odd jobs as a laborer for a few years. His parents
separated by the time Roy was eight, after which Roy was
raised by his mother as a single parent.
Roy was married three times. He married
Myrtle Fitzgerald in 1905. How or why that married ended
in not known.
He married Florence Curtis Knapp in 1909.
Roy and Florence had two children. Dodd was born in 1911
and Ruth in 1913. Apparently, Florence died sometime
after Ruth was born. Ruth was then adopted by Roy's
sister Jennie and her husband Edgar Freer.
Roy married Margaret Paterson in 1916.
They had three children: Jean, Betty, and Murray. Roy's
son Dodd lived with Roy and Margaret until 1930 or so.
Jean died in a car accident in 1923. Roy died in 1932.
